I wonder how much is due to lenders finally waking up about Prosper, and how much is due to Prosper only being open to lenders in a subset of states. Although given the dismal statistics, I would have to think it is more the former than the latter.
I don't know. However there's also the dynamic of Prosper being perceived as more of a "dick" in some lending circles, and people holding onto their money.
I'm in MD now and can't invest, but I do have a backup of a few thousand in the "bid on Prosper loans" kitty and to be honest Prosper did beat many of my other investments (even with the Ericscc of -2% ROI) over the last 2-3 years. Well, not Ford and FNM but...
So if Prosper cleaned up their act some, attracted lenders worth something (drop the 3% orig fee, come on...) and actually put some effort into dealing with deadbeats (even ineffective ones like suing the fucks) I'd probably bid again. It's not a bad idea, and with traditional credit markets tightening in 2009-2010 this could be a viable source of income and loans.
But I doubt it. Prosper seems to have fucked a lot of goodwill. The bitch is they actually laid some groundwork that will be ground up and destroyed. Kind of like the GM EV1. Ah well.
