[Fred93]

I was checking tonite to see how many people had been reading my blog.  I normally get 50 hits a day, or 100 hits on a day I update.  Yesterday there were 1400 hits referred from reddit alone.  Surprised the heck out of me.

I went to reddit.com and searched for fred93, and sure enough, some guy posted a link to one of my recent articles, and it made it to the front page of the business section.

Last I looked, I had a net positive count of 107 (that's people who clicked the up arrow minus people who clicked the down arrow I think).  When I click refresh, the number bounces around by several.  Does this really mean I'm seeing people vote in real time?  Oh my goodness.

A link to my blog has been on reddit for 23 hours, and it caused 1400 referral hits to my blog so far.  That's 1 per minute.  Ah the power of social media.  I think they rank by votes/hour, so postings will drop if they can't sustain the vote rate.  

There have been 51 comments posted so far.  This blows me away too.

the only thing that blows me away is that this doesnt happen more often. there are very few people out there (if any besides fred) providing this kind of analysis.

I'm on Reddit quite a bit, but didn't post this.

The numbers bouncing around has something to do with the spam filters that they use. I read a post about it sometime ago, but don't remember the details.

Congrats on getting out there! The comments on reddit are generally pretty educated for an internet message board/news aggregator (at least compared to many others I've seen).

Are you still getting a lot of hits from Reddit, or has it tapered off?  Maybe you'll start getting a lot of hits from Facebook soon.

The effect was very short-lived.  Its essentially over.  I've moved down to the 2nd page now.

1/03/2010  1400 from reddit + 192 other.
1/04/2010  87 from reddit + 104 other.
1/05/2010  14 from reddit + 51 other.

The "other" includes folks who clicked on a 2nd page of the blog after linking to the first page from reddit.

After observing reddit for awhile I think the serious reddit junkies get their rush from clicking on the "latest new stuff",  vicarious jollies from being "in the flow", like a dog with his head stuck out the window of a pickup truck on the freeway.

I don't think those clicks are worth much.  Reddit is short-attention-span theater.

Maybe you'll start getting a lot of hits from Facebook soon.   

Unlikely.  I saw the facebook page somebody just started, and I see he has a link to my blog.  My experience is that when somebody puts a link on some blog I get 10 or 20 hits.  And that's for a blog where there is some established audience.  This guy's facebook page is brand new, so there is no established audience.  Yet another link from somewhere is always welcome of course.
