Facebook fans are muzzled
« on: February 03, 2011, 03:50:33 pm »

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Prosper-Loans-Marketplace/64703893348?v=wall

Dateline 02/04/11 "2 hours ago" -- Prosper Loans Marketplace posted "As a financial company, Prosper is subject to industry regulations that make it difficult for us to answer questions quickly and thoroughly in a casual public forum like Facebook. Following in the footsteps of many other financial institutions, we have made the decision to no longer allow fans to post on our Facebook page."

And all previous questions and comments went ka-poof. Oh wait, not all. Just everything recent.

I think it's really that they didn't like the huge backlash that was going on on their Facebook page from people upset about the non-auction changes and in typical fashion, instead of having any real PR, they just destroy the community to try and hide the problems.

Nominating to The Lobby.

You can still comment on things Prosper posts, right?

I haven't liked any banks on Facebook, so I can't comment on what they said about other financial institutions.  But a number of things I've liked don't let fans post directly to the wall, only in comments on existing posts.  I don't see this as that big of a deal.

I am unable to post comments on anything that Prosper has posted even if I "Like" their fan page.

I noted several critical and questioning posts from users in the past few weeks.  I guess Prosper is taking some pages from the playbook of middle eastern governments, shutting down the means by which people can get to the "town square" to voice their concerns.

I admire your impeccable sense of proportion.

Nah, just the same story repeating itself over and over again.  The platform of communication may have changed, but the desire to control information remains the same.  Scale is irrelevant.

All they accomplish is to send people looking for a new place to congregate.  I suspect some will find their way here.
