People who are desperate for a loan are probably more risky as they've exhausted other resources- personal assets, family, friends, banks, etc.

Debt-free.
As in, "With this loan I can pay off all my CCs and be debt-free!" Uh, the Prosper loan is a debt, too.

Here are a few winners: "My name is", "payday", "cashcall", and the best of all.... "I have good credit"

We have a winner!  Looking at the description and titles for all loans up through the end of 2007 and words mentioned at least 1000 times, it looks like the word "payday" is the one most associated with failing loans.

Payday was used 1191 times and only 38.9% of loans with the word in the listing ended up being paid. (This compares to a 61.0% repayment rate of all loans.)

'Chance' and 'behind' were the next two words most associated with loans that didn't have a status of 'Paid'

Here's what I see in this loan set:

61.0% of all loans made before the end of 2007 have a status "Paid"

Guarantee: Used 219 times with 60.7% Paid
Guaranteed: Used 249 times with 65.1% Paid

Christian: Used 126 times with 54.0% Paid
Christmas: Used 312 times with 56.4% Paid

Automatic: Used 293 times with 65.5% Paid
Automatically: Used 631 times with 48.8% Paid

Consolidate: Used 2420 times with 58.6% Paid
Consolidation: Used 1685 times with 62.6% Paid
Consolidating: Used 760 times with 63.2% Paid
Consolidated: Used 185 times with 61.4% Paid

Name: Used 2271 times with 49.8% Paid

Cashcall: used 103 times with 41.5% Paid

Need: Used 6385 times with 51.6% Paid
Needed: used 1478 times with 53.3% Paid
Needs: used 1279 times with 51.8% Paid
Needing: used 230 times with 45.8% Paid

Help: Used 7252 times with 51.5% Paid
Helping: Used 1133 times with 53.1% Paid

Debt: used 7743 times with 64.0% Paid
Debts: Used 2190 times with 54.6% Paid

Free: Used 2741 times with 60.8% Paid

However, unlike the lottery, picking loans is not a purely random affair. It seems feasible that the way a borrower thinks about a loan, as expressed in their loan description, can be correlated to the loan outcome.

We feel that picking loans ought not to be a purely random affair. It doesn't seem that it ought to operate like drawing lottery numbers. But do we know this for sure?

In general, it seems that we do know that picking loans isn't random -- otherwise things like credit score wouldn't be relevant for predicting repayment rates. What we still don't know at this point is whether using the words in the listing to predict repayment rates gives us a better-than-chance way to predict whether a loan will fail.

At first glance, from the numbers above, it would seem to. But at this point we haven't yet explored any statistical significance of these numbers. We also haven't tried using the numbers to make predictions to verify against other loans. These are both things that I'd like to continue to do here and on the blog where I'm discussing this in more detail, http://lendingtuber.blogspot.com/

Hmm...this is a sort of analysis that I never even considered.  Very interesting work.  Not sure it will change my bidding habits but I will certainly be looking out for "Payday" now

Nice, Fox. Web link uses "cheats", while article is actually titled:

Actually, a relatively high percentage of posters here at .org actually made a profit with Prosper 1.0. An impressive group :)
