Googling the .org
« on: December 29, 2007, 12:00:14 pm »

Okay, it's midway through an 11-day at-home vacation, and I'm bored.

So, I've decided to see how .org is faring with google searches.

My method is simple.  I'll enter Prosper.com + one other word, and count how many entries from the top .org rates...

Ready?  Here we go...

Frist, I'll just type in Prosper.com

First entry is at the end of page 4, #31.  It's an entry to Fred93's blog.  That's still pretty low; ericscc, ProProsper, wiseclerk, et. al. all rate higher.

Now for the combinations:

1. Prosper.com + lending   Page 11, #94

"My Prosper.com experience" thread.  This is very low, behind the 2Mils homepage and all kinds of junk.  Prosper itself only comes in #10, incidentally.

2. Prosper.com + loan Page 2, #11

Fred93's blog again.  Not a bad showing, almost made page one.

3. Prosper.com + "default rate" Page 2, #11

Fred93's blog again.  A .org user is quoted on page one on a different site, however.

4. Prosper.com + "scam"   Page 2 #15

"My Prosper.com experience" thread again.

5. Prosper.com + safe   Page 5 #45

"Receive An Email From Prosper Threatening Suspension?" thread.

6. Prosper.com + forum  Page 2 #13

Fred93's blog again.  If we can get this combo onto page one, it would be good...

7. Prosper.com + late   Page 1 #1

Fred93's blog takes the top slot!

8. Prosper.com + borrow  Does not appear in forst 15 pages...

Hmmm... Maybe we are a little lendercentric?

9. Prosper.com + "bad credit"  Does not appear in first 15 pages...

We're not up there, but I found 15 pages, or well over 150 sites urging people with "bad credit" to go to Prosper.com...  :o

10. Prosper.com + "sucks"  Page one, #5

bamalucky's blog makes page one!

At any rate, it appears that prospers.org's profile is still very low at Google, although it's at least beginning to turn up.  So the growth in visitors here largely must have come from Prosper.com itself...

I don't google things with the complete name.

I think most lenders will google these combos

prosper + forum(s)
prosper + scam
prosper + lender(s)
prosper + blog(s)
prosper + fraud

All these hit pretty high on search

That's good.   :)  I don't usually tupe in the full name (Prosper.com) either, but if I'm initially researching a company, I do.

It would make sense that .org isn't coming up high on a .com pull, no?

I doubt anyone here gives a shit about you.  We pretty much all know that you are a vile and unethical parasite of a human being with an abnormal craving for attention."

People who never heard of Prospers.org would not type .org or the extra "s"; they'd type .com, if anything.

org is link #5 on yahoo...page 3 on google

Think is,anyone wanting to find the truth can find it..Anyone too stupid to blindly lend gets what they deserve.I have no sympathy left for anyone.

Before i sent money off to everbank,i read hours worth of internet searches...

Read about mlnbank..only an idiot would send to them & they pop up on just about any investment search

Well, there are a lot of other Prosper sites that have links to .org, and a number of us have also been making efforts to put the .org name in comments on articles about Prosper, so we may be getting new people through those mechanisms as well.

Also, someone (or a few people) is running those Google AdWords ads for .org, which also might br bringing in people.  Maybe whoever is responsible for that could post the stats on impressions (how many times the ads are displayed) and clicks.  If they don't want to be publicly identified with that project, if anyone PM's the stats to me, I'll post them anonymously for you, delete the PM, and forget who sent them to me.

There's been some google weirdness as of late...  NASA has spotted the problem and is working on a solution.

Give it a few days - it should be at least back to the first page for most of those.

We need to get some more comments onto that blog.  There seem to be a lot of cheerleaders with young portfolios there.

Googling "prosper" and "witchel" got tremendous results.   Prospers.org was the first entry!

Unfortunately, no one is going to search on that combination.  A more likely combination is "prosper" and "larsen," since he's the face of the company.  That yields a bazilion of the fawning puff-pieces quoting him.  Not until page 5 of the search results, does anything real come up -- Fred93's blog.

Google ranks pages largely by how many (and which) web sites link to them.

So, if you control a web site, adding links to prospers.org and other web sites and pages you'd like to be noticed more will help their ranking.
