And then there's the question of how the family of the dead woman might feel about her image being used to "sell" a Prosper listing.

Also at play here is that Prosper requires you to own the rights to the picture or that it be in the public domain.  Although, of the few that I've reported for using a picture specifically violating that, Prosper has never taken any down.

The B&W version of this picture appears to be in the public domain.  I sure if you look around a bit you would find the color version.

Who are the people bidding?  The only handle I recognize is anton.  This lender, however, should know better: http://www.prosper.com/groups/member_home.aspx?screen_name=dumbass http://www.ericscc.com/lenders/dumbass

I'm kinda wondering how babelphish did the reverse: find the B&W based on the color photo in the listing...?

What is the justification for using a photo that isn't yours?  The only one I can think of is to deceive.  That doesn't mean the listing is a fraud, but it does raise suspicions...  Why does he want people to think that's his mother?

Prosper won't take action because probably a quarter of all listings use bogus or dubious pictures.  But if someone calls it to my attention, I won't bid on it (assuming I still lent).  If deception is afoot, it's best to steer clear.

Its called advertizing.  Prosper does it.  Coke does it.  McDonalds does it.

Ah - I tried to do the reverse at tineye: I gave it the B&W image and it didn't come up with the color version.  Interesting that the match-up is only in one direction.

My bad.  Honestly the first time I was setting up the loan for my mother I didn't have a picture handy so I searched for an older lady who I thought looked nice, trustworthy type.  Grabbed a random google image and never gave it a second thought.  I never expected a need to set up a second loan, but stuff happens.

I believe I actually mentioned that the picture was not of my mother in the forum (http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums) that my group (Ars OpenForum Members) originates from.  That forum is google indexed.  You can find the forum post here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/599009962631/m/932005059731/p/1

I post several times sometimes involving other possibly suspect activities (legit in reality):

Hmm, I thought I had mentioned in the thread that the picture wasn't my mother, but I guess it never really occurred to me to be that important of a detail.

Last time the loan was funded so quickly with automated investments because of my credit score I didn't do much with this listing other than getting it out there.

I can change the picture tonight if it will allay any misgivings.

Prosper called... looks like they'll be taking the picture down.  So, that's that as it were.

Maybe it's only lenders that Prosper doesn't call.  :)

More seriously, tho', and generally speaking, Prosper's customer service seems to be on the ball since the latest re-launch.  I had weirdness accessing their forums that they fixed within one day.  And I think it was Xenon who got re-instated upon request in about a day too.  I don't recall that we got such service from the Philippines.  ;)

At least we know Prosper still reads .org.
