Prosper review at businessraid.com
« on: September 29, 2009, 03:40:46 pm »

Looks like a new site with only a handful of "business reviews".  Why they included Prosper among their initial reviews, I wouldn't know.

All the reviews seem rather cheery.  Too cheery.

Some interesting Prosper facts from this site:
Quote
Prosper first does a background and credit check on potential loan receivers to make sure they are who they say they are and that they have the basic credit to pay back a loan.
Quote
Prosper has also ran into some minor problems with the SEC claiming Prosper.com to be in violation of the Securities act of 1993. This again did not affect the borrowers or lenders much but did close down the website for a short amount of time.

"has also ran...?"

Saving for posterity.

Quote
Company Description:

A San Fransisco based peer-to-peer lending website that operates in an auction type setting. Launched in 2006 by Chris Larsen of Eloan and John Witchel.

Our Take:

Prosper.com opened to the public on February 5th, 2006 way before the recent financial crisis that centered around banking but now with loans harder to get than ever many are flocking to micro-lending and peer-to-peer lending companies such as Prosper.

In a new financial world many with average to good credit are left behind and now have to find alternative methods aside from banks and credit unions to get loans, this is where Prosper comes in. Prosper first does a background and credit check on potential loan receivers to make sure they are who they say they are and that they have the basic credit to pay back a loan. From here Prosper has their members who are lenders bid the lowest interest rate to win the right to give the loan.  Prosper takes the monthly payments and acts as the middle-man on these loans to cut down on some fraud.

Just as with any other financial online system there is a large susceptibility to fraud. There are a few claims online alleging fraud in their system not by the actual company but by those receiving the loans gaming the system. In most of these cases Prosper did more investigating and banned the borrowers. Prosper has also ran into some minor problems with the SEC claiming Prosper.com to be in violation of the Securities act of 1993. This again did not affect the borrowers or lenders much but did close down the website for a short amount of time.

Prosper.com seems to be one of the leaders and innovators in the peer-to-peer lending industry and that may be their edge as they not only have a chance to build a strong base and reputation but also have already gone through the growing pains of being a new company in a new emerging industry.

This site appears to be controlled by an outfit selling itself as...

A leading online reputation management and monitoring firm protecting high-profile companies and individuals from the dangers of a complex digital world.

I'd say the credibility of this site is rather limited.

Crazy thought: maybe they funded their start-up costs with a Prosper loan.   ;D

Looks geared to downplay controversial aspects, hoping the info will propagate to other places.

When you can't build a REAL reputation, hire someone to build a fake one FOR you.

Thanks for the feedback on the review it helps us in the future. We did research, read customer reviews, and tried out the system ourselves quickly but it seems we may not have done enough research as we are getting a lot of feedback now. This is the reason we are very open moderation wise and encourage comments on our reviews as we are just one opinion and voice on the matter. Our website is very new at this point and we hope to work out the kinks as we go on. Also I wanted to make a point that we are not paid for any reviews and no one in our company has had any contact with Prosper or have them as a client. The website is small right now but we hope to keep improving our reviews and keep our comments section open so others can voice their opinions. Feel free to add comments to the review and we will get them approved as soon as we can. Thanks again.

Thanks for coming around to talk with us.  I think most of us will appreciate that.

... read customer reviews ...

Where are these reviews?
By "customer" do you mean borrowers?  Lenders?

Given that you "may not have done enough research," are you considering revising your review?
If you plan additional research, is there any information that we can help you find?
