Prosper's expanding into Japan?
« on: December 21, 2007, 08:59:29 am »

Did I somehow miss this fact somewhere?  This article is one that's been recycled many times, but it's the first time I've noticed that part.  http://mymoney.iafrica.com/banking/737485.htm

The part I'm reading that caught my eye:

The internet is directly connecting investors and borrowers, taking banks out of the lending equation.

People have lent each other more than US$100-million dollars through Prosper.com since it launched in February 2006 and the US website recently partnered with SBI Holdings to expand into Japan.

;D  They better prod the law firm to send out a cybersquatting letter to that site.   :ninja:

IIRC, the site showed a 2005 copyright date, so PMI might be receiving the cybersquatting letter.

May the best dog, erm, horse, win!

BTW, are you an entrant to the "geekiest avatar contest"? Looking at the formula there, I am wondering if I should have seen it while cramming for an exam in some obscure science. Care to enlighten?

(Oops, sorry, I screwed up the quote.  It was directed at 112233.)

I hadn't seen that before!  Duh!  112233, is it new?  Just based on context, I gotta guess it has to do with calculating interest. (Now I have to go Google it!  BRB!)

Ah!  My math-savvy BF figured it out for me:  if you solve the formula, the result is 112233:D

I'd love to know what that formula is. It doesn't look like any interest formula I've ever seen.

The forumla expands to a variation on 112233's screenname.

I just evaluated 112233's avatar by hand. It's a good one! 112233 knows what the expression evaluates to, and now so do I!  :D

I see it now. Yes, I have to admit, it's a good one.

Friendly note for those of you not mathematically oriented.

That is a '*' and not a '-' in there.

Makes a world of difference.

Those of us who are not mathematically oriented will not even bother trying to figure it out.  We just used reasoning and figured it added up, or whatever, to 112233.

On 112233's avatar,

2
Capital Sigma  11(3-i)*10^2i
i=0

means sum the values after the Capital Sigma, substituting integer values from 0 to 2 for variable i:

11(3-0)*10^(2*0) + 11(3-1)*10^(2*1) + 11(3-2)*10^(2*2)

11*3*10^0 + 11*2*10^2 + 11*1*10^4

33*10^0 + 22*10^2 + 11*10^4

33*1 + 22*100 + 11*10000

33 + 2200 + 110000

I wasn't paying close enough attention I guess. I was thinking 'i' was an imaginary number.  Oh well...
